I got married Sept 10th, 2005 to a wonderful man named Matt.  Three months later after being off birth control for only 3 weeks we found out we were pregnant. I had a wonderful pregnancy..loved everything about it actually. Didn't have any problems what-so-ever. On Aug. 27th, 2006 we were blessed with my wonderful son Noah. Life was great. When Noah was 1 1/2 we decided that we wanted to add to our happy family. So we started trying.

Do you remember high school health class? I remember a cheerless woman issuing dire warnings about the dangers of unprotected sex, the scariest one of which was getting pregnant. We all knew that if you had unprotected sex once, you'd get pregnant and then nine months later you'd have a baby.

I found out I was pregnant with baby #3 the weekend before Thanksgiving 2009. We were so excited. We had been trying for 3 months. 2 days later I started spotting, then bleeding outright. We lost our baby 2 days before Thanksgiving. I was absolutely devastated. After a couple of weeks I managed to convince myself maybe I hadn't really been pregnant. That maybe the test was wrong.

Me and my Husband have been married for 8 years and we had been trying to have a child for 9 years. After a year of trying on our own I knew something was wrong so I went to my OBGYN and was told I was still young and that it will happen. I was 21 at the time. So I figured it was all in my head and for years I never went back to a doctor.

Ever since I was a little girl I have wanted to have children.  I think that is what most little girls want.  That is why we love dolls so much.  So it is no surprise that shortly after I got married, I started thinking more seriously about starting a family.  This is the story of my journey to becoming a mother.  It is a deeply painful and personal story.  I have chosen to share it for two reasons.  One is because it brings meaning to my struggle.  My pain will not have been in vain and it keeps the memory of those loved and lost alive.  The second reason, of equal importance, is so I might offer help and hope to other women experiencing the same loss.  Here is my story.

My story began about 5 years ago, my husband and I were blessed with a beautiful baby girl, Abby and in hopes to have another baby one day.  Our hopes were to have 3 children.  When my daughter was around 1, we found out I was pregnant.  We are overjoyed, happy, and excited.  Then on February 14th I had my 1st miscarriage at 8 weeks pregnant.

A week before Christmas, I was on the internet looking at baby names. My husband asked suspiciously, “You’re not adopting any more pets, are you?” “No,” I replied, “I think I’m pregnant.” He laughed. I was on the pill and hadn’t missed a period or experienced any signs of pregnancy, so it certainly didn’t seem likely. Despite never being pregnant before, I insisted that I ‘felt’ pregnant. Three days later I took a test and saw a positive.

I am 33 years old and my husband and I have been trying to conceive our first child since January 2009. For a long time I thought I would never be married.  I have mild cerebral palsy which affects my left side and I was always aware that this might put some guys off.  But my biggest obstacle to meeting someone was myself - I didn't have much confidence.

My husband and I decided to start a family about six months after we were married in September of 1999. After a year of trying we made an appointment and did the whole fertility workup, but the doctor couldn’t find any reason why we weren’t conceiving. Another year went by with no luck and we were at the point of pursuing further testing.

I am the face of Ectopic Pregnancy and Miscarriage BUT now I'm also the face of Early Miscarriage.

Dec. 12.2010 I decided to take a pregnancy test to ease my thoughts on me being late. I was only a week late but with the medicine the doctors gave me for my type 2 diabetes,I was having my period every month. So I used a test that came with my ovulation kit. I waited for 15 minutes before I actually looked at it and it was a light positive. So I took another one again an light positive. So I emailed my friend a picture of the test and asked "does this mean I'm pregnant?" She sent me a email with a big smiley face and said YUP.

On October 30, 2008, we found out that we were expecting our second child. We were beyond thrilled. We didn't share the news with many people in the beginning. With the holidays coming up, we thought it would be the perfect time to tell our families. I went out and bought a Big Brother shirt for Matthew so we could tell our families by having him wear it. I actually bought it to tell my husband but it kinda backfired on me. We had planned on telling my family on Thanksgiving but some unexpected doctor appointments came up so I finally had to tell my mom so she could help watch our son while I went to my doctors appointments. They were so happy that we were having another baby. We had planned on telling my husbands parents at Christmas time since they live out of state and this was our year to be there for Christmas but the weather changed all of that. My husband ended up telling them over the phone. They were also very excited.

My husband and I had spent a year trying unsuccessfully to get pregnant. A trip to the doctors confirmed one of our greatest fears, that we might never conceive. We decided that rather than give in and give up, we’d fight for the one thing we wanted most- to be parents. And so we did.

On May 1st, 2010 my husband (Erik) and I found out we were expecting for the second time. Immediately, we told our 2 year old he was going to be a big brother. He knew Mommy had a baby in her tummy. The pregnancy was very different than my first. I didn't have morning sickness right away and I felt like I was going to have my period at any moment. I wasn't concerned because I had heard this was a symptom many women feel early in their pregnancies. One night, after we had put our son to bed, Erik and I cuddled up to watch 'The Time Traveler's Wife'. I'd never seen it before and didn't know what to expect. I went to bed that night very emotional. Being newly pregnant, the multiple miscarriages she'd had filled me with worry. I had a sick feeling in my stomach all night.

My husband and I were thrilled to be expecting our 2nd child. We had a 6 week scan, which was routine at my OB and saw a strong heartbeat.  Things progressed...I had horrible morning sickness, but told myself it was all worth it.

So my pregnancy was pretty uneventful, besides the horrible morning sickness that I had the first few months. I did everything right, went to all my doctors appointments, ate right, didn't drink or smoke, and I went to breastfeeding classes and a few different prenatal classes just so I would be ready. I was attending university when I found out I was pregnant and I was due in November so I decided I would finish that year off and take the next year off to take care of the baby. So September rolled around, and I was sad not to be in school, but excited because in only a few months my son would arrive.

I found out I was pregnant when my boyfriend (now husband) came home from work and with him he had brought a pregnancy test. He said he just had a feeling and asked me to take it, so i did.  Sure enough 3 minutes later there where 2 little pink lines, I was ecstatic. When I showed him he was excited also.

Sarah
Mom to Aaron or Erinn November Santoro
Miscarried at 6 weeks, 3 days on November 3rd, 2010
Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania

This poem letter is dedicated to Aaron/Erinn November Santoro... our first child, son or daughter, for whom we must wait til we enter the Gates of Heaven to meet for the first time. Aaron/Erinn was the name God gave me after the ultrasound results, since we don't know if its a boy or girl there are two versions. November for the middle name is so we always remember the month. Aaron/Erinn died at 6 weeks and 3 days old.

I wrote this on Friday, November 19th, 2010 the night of the day we got the call with the news opposite of what we had been praying and believing for.

I was first diagnosed with endometriosis three years ago after having a huge cyst rupture. I'd had the symptoms for years without even realizing it could be something else other than a really bad menstrual cycle.  I was told my chance of conceiving was about 7%, and that the disease progressed with time. I'd always wanted a big family, with several children, so I took the news hard. Luckily for me I was engaged to be married in a month, so my now husband and I decided to start trying right away. God blessed us with a healthy son nine months later.
