Stephanie
"Junebug"
Lost to Early Miscarriage
Toronto, Canada

Do you remember high school health class? I remember a cheerless woman issuing dire warnings about the dangers of unprotected sex, the scariest one of which was getting pregnant. We all knew that if you had unprotected sex once, you'd get pregnant and then nine months later you'd have a baby.

I was almost 36 weeks pregnant and had started my maternity leave a bit early to get the house ready for baby #2.  I had noticed a bit of lightening and a decrease in movement for a couple of days, but that's normal in the final months of pregnancy because the baby has less space to move, and I still felt the baby rolling and turning and at times it felt like he was stretching out in there so I just brushed it off as being normal. The Friday before he was born I went to Toys R Us to buy him an infant rocker and I remember while I was sitting on the floor at home putting it together that it seemed a bit easier to move around, I just figured it was the lightening you hear about as the baby begins to drop...

In late March of 2009, my then fiance and I discovered we were expecting our first child together. For the last week I had thought that something was different, but I didn't want to give myself over to the thought of being pregnant until I could know for sure since my periods had a history of being late. After we found out we were both so excited and went to the doctor the next day. When we heard all of my blood work was fine we began to tell people. At this time my biggest worry was that my wedding dress would not fit when I was three and a half months pregnant.

I didn't know on that day that things were going to go horribly wrong. I knew that I was leaking a small bit of fluid, but maybe it wasn't fluid, maybe I was being overcautious. None the less, I called my Mother in Law to come look after Jenna, my two year old, while I ran to the hospital. I really didn't think anything was serious.. I was singing in the truck on the way into town for God's sake! I grabbed a bite before I went up to emergency... I was just going to make sure everything was alright.... It wasn't.

So my pregnancy was pretty uneventful, besides the horrible morning sickness that I had the first few months. I did everything right, went to all my doctors appointments, ate right, didn't drink or smoke, and I went to breastfeeding classes and a few different prenatal classes just so I would be ready. I was attending university when I found out I was pregnant and I was due in November so I decided I would finish that year off and take the next year off to take care of the baby. So September rolled around, and I was sad not to be in school, but excited because in only a few months my son would arrive.

Friday, Novemeber 12th I was as happy as can be but I was one week and 2 days past my due date so I was a bit uncomfortable. The past couple of days I had been having a bit of cramping and light spotting, which I was told was likely my "bloody show". I was a bit freaked out and didn't know what "normal" was but when I called Labour and Delivery at the HSC, they said to wait it out and come in when either my water breaks or my contractions start. I was so incredibly anxious for my sweet little girl to be here and come home with us but she wasn't quite ready, I suppose. So we waited and that day I was scheduled for a routine ultrasound because I was a week late and they wanted to check on her and talk about being induced.

Baby 2- Ectopic Miscarriage at 10 weeks, Death June 9th, 2010

My name is AmyLynn.  I lost my first baby due to an ectopic pregnancy.  I was given a needle that would force by body to miscarry the baby. We had been trying to get pregnant for 3 years, with nothing, then all of a sudden I was in the hospital and it all happened so fast.

I’ve always known I wanted children.  Well before I’d even met the man I wanted to have them with, they were wanted.  And thanks to a lifetime of irregular cycles, my greatest desire soon turned to my greatest fear – that as much as I wanted children, I wouldn’t be able to have them.

I personally have lost 2 angels to miscarriage. My first was November 24, 2007 at 4 weeks, and the second on August 25, 2010 at 10 weeks 3 days. My first miscarriage was devastating, as my husband and I had been trying for awhile to get pregnant. We had actually been told that we had little chance to conceive. Then finally, 2 little blue lines showed up!! I was overjoyed - I couldn't wait to be a Mommy :)

We got married in June 2008 and started ttc right away... We learned on Sept 26th, 2008 that I was pregnant. Dan is a soldier and was away with work in Comox, BC when I found out and I called him to tell him the news. We were both super excited and couldn't wait to tell our families but decided to wait until Dan came back home so we could tell them together. Nobody even knew we were trying - we still had this grand plan of surprising everyone. The night I found out I actually went for dinner with Dan's mom, grandmother and my parents then went to Dan's Aunt and Uncle's 50th wedding anniversary and it was SO hard not to tell them.

Last year, I was pregnant with my first child. My daughter, Isabella, was due on January 1st, 2010. January 1st came and went. She was perfectly healthy, so the doctors told me she’d come when she was ready.

By the time January 9th came, my doctor decided to book me for an induction on the 12th at 7am. Well, being my daughter, she did things on her own terms. The morning of the 11th, I woke with mild contractions. We waited them out for a couple of hours at home, and then decided to go to the hospital when they got to 3-4 minutes apart. We were admitted around 1pm.

When Steven and I found out we were pregnant. It was a surprise, but not one of those surprises where your mind wanders in a million places not knowing what to do. We looked at each other smiled and told each other everything would be ok. Telling our parents, family and friends was very nerve wracking not knowing what the reactions would be. Pleased to know everyone was very happy and supportive.

On September 13, 2008 I married the man of my dreams - my amazingly supportive and loving husband, Tim. Years before we were married, Tim and I daydreamed about starting our family. When we first began dating while still in university, we candidly discussed our desire to become parents. As our relationship progressed, so did the seriousness of our conversations about parenthood. We felt it important to discuss our views on parenting prior to committing to marriage, and even prior to our engagement it was not uncommon for Tim and I to bicker and banter about how we would raise our future children.

When our daughter was about to turn 5 we decided that it was time for us to have another baby. We were fortunate enough to get pregnant the first month of trying. Everything was going great, no morning sickness, no complications, a textbook pregnancy. At our 20 week scan we found out that we were expecting a little boy and we were THRILLED!

It all began at my cousins wedding; My sister in law was about 20 weeks pregnant and showing beautifully. My Fiancée Tyler immediately fell in love with her growing belly and seemed to cater to her every need that night. It didn't come to much shock when he said that next day that he was ready to be a dad. Three weeks later, sure enough I saw those two pink lines. We were ecstatic!!

In September 2009, I was so thrilled to find out I was pregnant...

On the December 7th, 2009, I went for my 18 week ultrasound and the technician said that they suspect a problem with the baby's heart.  She couldn't see the "hockey sticks" but they were not able to say anything else, I would have to wait to hear from my doctor.  The next day, my Dr's office called and asked me to come in for an appointment that day...  They said that they believe that the baby's heart is not developing properly and referred our case urgently to the Fetal Medicine Clinic here in Calgary.  I went for another ultrasound and a fetal ECG on December 16th and we were given the news what the little heart is in really bad shape - the left side is seriously under-developed.  They said it was a congenital heart defect known as Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome and in addition, the baby only had a two vessel umbilical cord which is often an indicator of other issues..
