Having a baby was never easy for me.  I had my first miscarriage at 12 weeks in September 2001.  My second miscarriage at 5 weeks was in March of 2005.  My third and last miscarriage at 7 weeks was march of 2007.  In January of 2008 I was pregnant again and I thought for sure I would miscarry again.

In the summer of 2006, I hadn't been feeling good a lot. A pregnancy test revealed my first pregnancy was starting! We went for an ultrasound in the fall. We were so excited. By this time we could already feel the baby kicking. I just wanted to know what I was having so I could start buying outfits, toys, and all that good stuff. We went to have the ultrasound that morning without a care in the world. The tech started doing the ultrasound. She was taking a long time, like she was having trouble. She said she couldn't find her stomach and I might have to go to a different hospital. I didn't care; I just wanted to know what it was! The baby had its legs crossed and she couldn't tell. She finished up and told me to go back downstairs to my OB's office. My doctor came in the room and was asking if I could get to a downtown hospital right now. Then he asked Steve and me if anyone had mentioned anything about a hernia. We told him no, but he didn't reply, just told us to get down to the other hospital and he would call ahead. On the twenty minute ride down to the hospital, I wasn't scared, just disappointed that I still didn't know what I was having. Steve, I think, seemed uneasy.

In September 2009, I was so thrilled to find out I was pregnant... 

On the December 7th, 2009, I went for my 18 week ultrasound and the technician said that they suspect a problem with the baby's heart.  She couldn't see the "hockey sticks" but they were not able to say anything else, I would have to wait to hear from my doctor.  The next day, my Dr's office called and asked me to come in for an appointment that day...  They said that they believe that the baby's heart is not developing properly and referred our case urgently to the Fetal Medicine Clinic here in Calgary.  I went for another ultrasound and a fetal ECG on December 16th and we were given the news what the little heart is in really bad shape - the left side is seriously under-developed.  They said it was a congenital heart defect known as Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome and in addition, the baby only had a two vessel umbilical cord which is often an indicator of other issues..

In May of 2008 my life was busy. I had just moved and was adjusting to being a single parent when I found out I was pregnant.  My pregnancy started off very rough and I was put on bed rest due to placenta previa.  On a visit to the perintologist I was told that my placenta had moved back to a normal position, but they thought there was something wrong with my child’s heart.  July 17, 2008 I was given news that no parent wants to hear.  My baby, a boy my children and I had decided to name Ethin, was going to be born with a Congenital Heart Defect (CHD) called  Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome (HLHS).
