Stillborn on May 18th, 2009
Elon, NC

My story starts in January 2009. That is when we found out we were pregnant. Our due date was October 8, 2009.  Friday, April 3, 2009 the day after my 4-year wedding anniversary. The day before I had my first trimester ultrasound screening. The ultrasound tech was really rough with my stomach. She pressed my belly really hard to try and make the baby move. Since I have Rheumatiod Arthritis, I was in a lot of pain and I called my doctors office to see if ther was anything that I could take that was stronger than Tylenol. My doctor called in Darvocet for me. I took it the day of April 3. That night I woke up at midnight to a puddle of blood in the bed, I was 13 weeks and 1 day pregnant. I was terrified because I knew that I had lost my little baby. I called the on call doctor and she said to report to the hospital as soon as possible because I was probably having a miscarriage. When we arrived at the hospital, because of my tipped uterus, they could not use the Doppler, they had to do an ultrasound and we found out that our little girl was okay. I remember thinking what a relief. The doctors told me that sometimes people just bleed when they are pregnant. (I still don't believe that) I left the hospital with the diagnosis of "Everything is fine, everything is good, everything is normal, don't worry."

In mid-June, Wyatt, my husband, decided he wanted to quit smoking. Well, Iwasn't going to keep smoking cigarettes around him so I quit too. About five weeks later, I was four weeks pregnant. I had been told by a previous OB/GYN that I would probably have to have intervention to conceive. Miraculously, I got a Big Fat Positive, or BFP, in July 2009. Talk about a surprise. I took two more pregnancy tests just to be sure. I had horrid morning sickness up until I was a little over 21 weeks. Otherwise, things were fairly normal. I had had slight spotting at 6.5 weeks but I'd been pulled in for an ultrasound (u/s), and it was determined that nothing was wrong except for a cyst on my ovary.

We started trying April of '06, right after we got married. We got pregnant 3 months later and I was so thrilled, but then fear set in as I started bleeding, and continued bleeding all the way to 10 weeks. I was placed on bed rest at 9 weeks to try and stop the bleeding and it worked. We went for our 12 week appointment to find out the baby had passed 5 days after the last time we had seen him. We found out our baby was a son due to genetic testing.

In April of 2007, my husband Mark and I found out that we were expecting triplets.  To say we were shocked is an understatement but after spending two years trying to get pregnant, we quickly adjusted to the idea of welcoming three new babies into our family and started preparing for life with triplets. We found out we were expecting two girls and a boy and could not have been happier.  I could not wait to dress my girls in matching outfits and have a “Momma’s boy.”  Unfortunately, by the time I was 18 weeks pregnant, the signs of preterm labor had already begun and I was admitted to the hospital for the remainder of my pregnancy.  I was put on strict hospital bedrest and although we knew that things were very risky, as the weeks passed and we were able to keep my labor from progressing we began to become hopeful again.

This is my story...35 years ago. I want all the girls to know I am so sorry for the pain they are going through. This is such a rough journey. My heart is with you.

After 35 years I still remember everything like it was yesterday. At 52 years old it was by far the saddest day of my life. I had been to several monthly appointments. All seemed to be well. I never had an ultrasound, they didn't do them 35 years ago unless they felt something was wrong.

I was a couple days short of 37 weeks pregnant. My belly was growing bigger and bigger and sleeping was become more and more difficult. Poor Lucas had to try and sleep next to me with my constant rearranging and repeated trips to the restroom. As hard as it was to get no sleep, I loved being pregnant. I loved feeling our little girl wiggle around in my belly. I loved watching the way it changed shape and would dance as she did.

Chris, Emma and I were getting ready in the morning for our ultrasound.  We were talking to Emma about how she would get to see pictures of the “tiny baby” on the TV.  We were so excited to see the baby moving on the screen and hoping to learn his/her sex.  Because we were both going to work after our appointment, we drove separately.  Emma and I were going in my car; Chris in his.  We were running late which is usual for us in the mornings.  Emma and I were going to go straight there.  Chris was going to stop for a video tape so we could capture it all, just as we had with Emma.

My boyfriend & I found out I was pregnant at 4-5 weeks, and we were ecstatic. And every day I worried I was going to have a miscarriage. I read up on miscarriages that happen very early on, and miscarriages that happen without you even knowing it. Every day I wondered, and when I finally hit 12 weeks it was the biggest relief of my life. The day I had my first ultrasound I was so scared the baby wasn't going to be in there, or that it wouldn't have a heartbeat. She was too small at her first ultrasound, so we could only see the flutter of her heartbeat. One month later was when we heard it for the first time and it's a day that I will never forget. One week later I was scheduled to have a colposcopy done, because my pap smear at my first appointment had shown abnormal cells. From what I could understand, there was a chance they were high risk and could lead to cervical cancer, and so at my colposcopy they had also taken a biopsy (a tiny piece of my cervix). I was scheduled to come in September 7th to find out the results. After the procedure, I started having a little cramping and spotting but it wasn't alot and everyone that I had spoken to, doctors included, had told me I was probably just dehydrated and my "cramping" was most likely round ligament pains from my stomach growing to make room for the baby.

My third, and my fiancĂ©e’s first; Carli was not planned, but she was excitedly wanted. I went on and on for weeks about how great it was going to be when we felt her kick, named her, brought her home, and so on. When my older girls would fight, I would smile and say “oh, I can’t wait till there are three of them.” When we crammed into the truck for a road trip to visit Ray’s family on Thanksgiving, I chattered excitedly about how fun it would be next year, trying to get three car seats in. I made plans. I allowed hopes and dreams to form. It never occurred to me that something could take all this away from me.

We had been trying to get pregnant on and off for ten years-yes you read that right ten years.  We had seen two different gynecologists, and three different reproductive endocrinologists.  The results were always the same-you have PCOS.  We tried Clomid to no avail, we had hysterosalpingiograms, we had surgeries, and ultimately tried IUI with injectable infertility drugs.  Finally our second reproductive endocrinologist said “IVF is your only option” which was an option we couldn’t afford so I decided we would just give up.  Of course giving up only went as far as a few months when I found myself scouring the internet for just one more chance with a different doctor…

I found out I was pregnant in the beginning of November, 2008. It was unexpected but my boyfriend, Rich, and I were sooo beside ourselves in happiness. Naive, never expecting any bad outcome, we went right to Barnes and Noble that night to pick out a baby name book. We agreed on names and bought baby books. Rich slept with his hand on my tummy every night and from the first night we knew of my pregnancy he would talk to the baby and kiss my belly every night before bed. We had our first doctor's appointment the next week and had a date ultrasound. We saw a beautiful strong heartbeat and our little bean and were given a due date of July 26th. All of this happened at one of the most stressful times in my life but we made the most of it. Maybe God knew I was too stressed out for this pregnancy, I don't know...

I knew I had always wanted children. I was diagnosed with severe endometriosis in 2004 and that December, they had to remove my left ovary and tube. My husband and I were married in May 2009 and were very excited about starting a family. I saw a fertility specialist in October and was on fertility medicine for 4 months.. The doctor told us there was no way we could get pregnant during the month of March, due to me having 3 cysts on my right ovary and told us not to even expect to be. We knew God was in control anyway and I found out on April 13th, 2010 we were expecting. My husband was at work. I decided to take a test, not even sure why. I took one, laid it over to the side and finished getting ready. Knowing I had ovulation tests and pregnancy tests in the cabinet, when I saw 2 lines, I had to take a 4th look, thinking it was an ovulation test. But it WASN’T. I called my husband and told him the news but he didn’t believe me. A couple weeks prior, I had a friend pee on a pregnancy test for me and I gave it to him for April Fool’s Day.. So, needless to say, I could understand why he didn’t believe me. He told me I would have to take one in front of him for him to believe me, and I did. We were ecstatic. I was finally going to be a MOMMY.

Hi All,
We asked for your help in creating the ultimate healing/therapeutic playlist on facebook a few weeks ago, and here is what you came up with. Thanks for all the wonderful suggestions!

Here in Minnesota it's cool and cloudy out, and I'm in one of those 'lay in bed and listen to music' moods, so I figured it was the perfect time to compile and post this list, in case there are others out there in a similar mood :)

We'll be linking to this list on the Resources page; please leave additional suggestions in the comments below and we'll get them added. Happy listening! -Kristin

I have included YouTube videos for almost every song today (Sept. 11th). If you have any other songs you want added please email me courtney@facesofloss.com! -Courtney

Mom to Dash Alexander Grieger
April 22nd, 2010
Queen Creek, AZ

It's hard to know where to start this story, knowing how painfully it ends. I want to preface with the disclaimer that I have no filter on my heart. When I write of my son, I do not sensor details for the sake of others. He was and forever is my baby, his life was as important as any other and the story of his life and birth should be told in honor of him.  I dont want there to be any obligation on my part to shield others from awkwardness, talking about Dash is the best therapy I have and I tell his story freely and without guilt. I am not afraid that I will forget, I am afraid that others will forget. Therefor I speak of him often, openly and lovingly.

My pregnancy wasn't planned but I couldnt have been more excited, scared out of my mind, but so excited and so in love with my baby from the second I found out.. (I have ALWAYS wanted to be a mom). Everything went well, I had bad nausea but other than that not a bad pregnancy at all. My first US was scheduled for May 18th 2010 ( i would have been almost 18 weeks) but on May 17th, my water broke. I went to the hospital and they sent me home after simply telling me to come back for an ultrasound the next day.

Your Feedback, Please?

Hey Everyone!

So we are working on coming up with some super cool Faces of Loss merchandise, but before we go "live" with anything, we want to get your feedback!

Which of the above items (if any) would you be likely to purchase to help support Faces? Right now we've got car decals (in pink or blue), T-shirts (the back says "I am one of the faces of pregnancy/infant loss"), reusable totes, and keychains to choose from. All proceeds will go right back into the organization!

Which of the items above are you likely to purchase to support Faces? Choose all that apply.

Please let us know your thoughts by completing the poll or leaving a comment with your feedback. If you have other ideas of gear you'd like to see, please, please share!

There is also a poll up on the right-hand side of the site, and we'll keep it up and running for 2 weeks.

Thanks for your help!

Natasha
Mom to a baby lost to miscarriage, May 2009
and Emmalyn, born at 20 weeks on June 19th, 2010
Indiana

We decided that we would not have children for the first five years of marriage. We wanted to have time to enjoy each other and the ability to go to the store late at night…to go to a movie without thinking about it…to just get up and go. We were married in May 2007. Quickly after marriage, our “plan” went right out the window. I caught “baby fever” quickly. Family and friends seemed to be having babies left and right. At one point, there were seventeen people pregnant!  We decided to start trying in April 2008.

Mom to twin boys Bryston Gabriel and Colton Joseph
Born and passed on August 15th, 2010 at 22 weeks, 1 day
Camby, IN

I am blessed with two amazing daughter's. Tianna, who was born in 2005 and Aubrianna, who was born in 2008.

In 2009 I went to the doctor because I wasn't having my period. It had been over 3 months at that time. After doing some tests I was diagnosed with PCOS. Poly Cystic Ovary Syndrome. We weren't ready to have another child at that point so I started taking the birth control pill and my periods came back and became regular. In February of 2010, my husband and I decided that we wanted to start trying for our third child. We were told that it could take a year or more to get pregnant and that we may even need fertility treatments. On April 10, 2010 I took a pregnancy test. I was not expecting it to come back positive, but it did! We were in shock. We conceived in a little over a month and without any medical help. On May 4, 2010 my husband and I went in to have an ultrasound done. We were told that we were 7 weeks 3 days pregnant and that there were two babies!

Melissa
Mom to Baby 'Cactus'
Lost to Miscarriage February 10th, 2010
Edmonton, Alberta, Canada

My story can be told through a letter I wrote to my baby:

Dear Cactus,
It was a Wednesday. February 10th. We had our very first ultrasound scheduled, and you were supposed to be 12 weeks old. The night before, when I'd gone to the bathroom, there had been just the smallest amount of blood when I wiped - and I was really worried about it. Daddy kept telling me not to worry; that he was sure everything was fine. In any case, we had the ultrasound the next day, so there was no point in running over to the hospital - if something was wrong, we'd find out about it in the morning.

Happy birthday to me!! June 21st 2010 I get my first positive! holy cow! I can't explain what I felt, What a birthday present!!  Though it was unplanned, It was very exciting!  Things were going great! we'd been to doctors' appointments, talked about names, re-arranged our bedroom, as we have a small apartment, and were going to share our room with the baby! Everything was going great! I didn't even have any morning sickness! Then one day I had a little pinkish color when I wiped after going pee.. I called the dr. in a panic, as I have had a miscarriage in the past. They told me from what I explained to them that it just sounded like a little healthy spotting, and not to worry... I had it a few more times that week, never more then just a stain on the paper when I went to the bathroom. Then, as fast as it had started, It stopped, and I thought to myself 'thank God! Now I won't be so scared to go pee!'

Adriana
Mom to Sophia Alexis Davies
Stillborn on March 27th, 2008
St. Petersburg, FL

In 2008 my husband Justin and I had been expecting our first baby, a girl that we named Sophia. My whole pregnancy had been semi-tough, I was diagnosed with diabetes 7 months into my pregnancy, had some minor blood pressure issues and low platelets. The new diet and activity schedule I was placed on was difficult to get used to but I managed to stick to it and still enjoy every new thing happening with my body.

Toronto, Ontario, Canada

I am 29 years old and live in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. I am married to a wonderful man named Gary. We will be married for two years on July 12th. :)

We decided that it was time to try for a baby. After just one attempt, we got pregnant!!! I don't think words can describe how happy we both were to be welcoming our first child. The pregnancy was great...at first. I had it very easy. No morning sickness, no nausea. It was great!

My first angel:

From the time I was a child I always knew I wanted to be a mother. I married my husband Nate a month before my 27th birthday and a year and a half later, I knew I wanted to try to have a baby. He was skeptical as he is almost five years younger than me. I told him he would never feel ready. In November 2009 I realized I had skipped my period. I got a bunch of negatives on tests and discovered I had only skipped my period because of going off birth control. In January I skipped it again but this time got a BFP (big fat positive)! I was shocked, texted my husband a pic and then had to explain to him what two lines meant (haha). I got a blood test and sure enough it confirmed the results. We told family and soon after that at around 5 weeks we told our church members and friends. I put a “Preggo” spaghetti can up as my Facebook picture and announced it there too because I was too excited to keep this joy a secret!
